Liqour ban in Madhya Pradesh may cause problems. Let’s see how and why.

In Madhya Pradesh Chief minister is talking to close the liquor shops in a manner to implement the quality management procedures slow. Thus the state is set to join the ranks of Kerala, Bihar and Tamil Nadu in which this prohibition was imposed from 2014 onwards. It is also strongly understood by other political leaders with women voters, that particularly in the people with lower income groups where domestic violence was seen to be associated with alcoholism. Also to impose a complete prohibition on liquor is not at all easy as the BJP government is still thinking about choosing between revenue and social cause as some party leaders are requested by their voters for removal of liquor shops from their areas.

Whereas in Kerala the ban was imposed in 2014 and the Left Democratic Front came to power in 2016 and has talked about revoking the ban but nothing has been done so far. Abhishek Bhargava who is a BJP’s youth wing leader and the son Gopal Bhargava who is a rural development minister, Abhishek Bhargava after witnessing protests against liquor shops in his home district Sagar, has sought total prohibition in Madhya Pradesh.

Apart from the effect of a ban on the state’s economy/VAT tariffs dry up, the people who support the ban, argues that this is the small change as compared to the damage caused to people’s health and lives who intake liquor. The other serious issue is whether the prohibition works but the very immediate short-term; indeed. Also, the Supreme Court is thinking about the issue, that whether allowing liquor sales 500 meters from highways will be helpful in controlling drinking and whether drinking 600 meters away is less of a problem.

On the other hand, many are believing that the prohibition will encourage smuggling and also the creation of gangs and can move to even more other activities which will be not at all lucrative. And there is more possibility that the people can hook to more dangerous intoxicants.
